Learning is effective when you process and retain the information you learn. In this week’s post, let us learn how to use Instructional Design to make learning effective.

Whoever said you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, hasn’t heard about Instructional Design. For the uninitiated, Instructional Design is the discipline of making learning more effective using instructions.

The ultimate ADDIE checklist for your e-learning instructional design

Used during World War II in military training, Instructional Design has grown in popularity since and has become an efficient mechanism to ensure the quality of instruction. In fact, Instructional Design is all around us. It’s in the little ‘what’s new and how to use it’ notes that Google or Facebook provides, when they upgrade. It’s the magic ingredient in Google Analytics training programs or how-to-do videos.

Good instructional design is about learning that sticks–It could be a manual, an instructor-led session, scenario-based learning, group activities or simulations, etc. However, regardless of the tools of training delivery, Instructional Design ensures that what you learn is retained. Here’s how:

Doing it right: Most Instructional Design professionals, including us at Hornbill FX, put together an instructional solution keeping in mind various instructional design models and adult learning principles. We outline what we set out to achieve, and then plan out how to go about achieving it.

Picking the appropriate tool box: Once we analyze what the learners need, we begin to think about the most effective methods of instruction. Instructional designers pick the right tools, activities, and learning aids, to make the learning effective.

Creative and engaging storytelling: We pick up on new things faster when they are connected to what we already know. Creative storytelling helps us set this context. And what better way to tell a story than through the engaging medium of animation?

Simulating real-world experiences: Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality can produce some truly breathtaking wow moments to the learning space by harnessing the impossible. It shakes up a boring class by actively engaging with the learners using stimulated real world environments. It elevates the learning experience and deepens the connection of the learner by bringing live action to their desks!

Doing it better: In order to improve constantly, you need to measure your performance. While designing our learning modules, we make sure that we have interim assessments and activities to continuously gauge the learner’s performance.

This discussion doesn’t end here–we’ve barely scraped the surface. As an immersive eLearning company, we use Instructional Design daily and can’t stop talking about its importance. Watch this space for more!

Happy Learning!
